Vedanta Power

Powering Progress

Reinforcing grid stability as a cornerstone of India's energy security.

WHO WE ARE

India’s Leading Private
Thermal Power Producer

Vedanta Power Limited, part of the diversified Vedanta Inc. is among India’s leading private power producers, delivering reliable and affordable power that lights homes, touches lives, and drives transformation across the nation.

With a total thermal power capacity of 4,780 MW, the company supplies power to discoms nationwide through long-term partnerships, while supporting emerging grid requirements.

With a multi-state footprint and long-term offtake commitments, Vedanta Power is reinforcing grid stability as a cornerstone of India’s energy security.

THE STORY OF OUR FOUNDER

Founder’s Journey in Powering India’s Growth

The power sector lies at the heart of a modern, industrial nation, enabling infrastructure, accelerating economic growth, and improving quality of life. Guided by this belief, our founder and Chairman, Anil Agarwal, envisioned a future where reliable and affordable power would illuminate homes and power industries across India.

This vision took shape in 2006, with the signing of a landmark memorandum of understanding between Vedanta Limited (then Sterlite Energy) and Grid Corporation of Odisha Limited, the Government of Odisha’s state grid utility. This led to the commissioning of the Jharsuguda Thermal Plant, Odisha, supplying electricity to the state and laying the foundation for a growing portfolio.

Building on this momentum, Talwandi Sabo Thermal Plant was incorporated in 2008 in Punjab’s Mansa district, with a clear mandate to supply 100% of its power to the state grid, strengthening regional energy security and reinforcing Vedanta’s commitment to nation-building.

Over the years, this vision has evolved into a strategy of scale, resilience, and transformation. In 2022, Vedanta acquired a partially constructed thermal power plant in Chhattisgarh, advancing it into the Sakti Thermal Plant.

This was followed by a landmark acquisition in 2023, bringing Meenakshi Energy Limited in Andhra Pradesh into the fold. In a strong demonstration of execution excellence, the plant was fully commissioned within two years of acquisition, transforming a distressed asset into a fully operational power station.

Together, these milestones reflect Anil Agarwal’s enduring vision for the thermal power sector and Vedanta’s proven capability to transform opportunity into impact, turning underutilised assets into engines of growth, and powering India’s journey forward.

Scaling with Discipline
Building to Power Lives

Vedanta Power's journey reflects a focused approach towards building scale through disciplined execution and strategic expansion. From a strong regional base, the business portfolio has rapidly evolved into multi-state thermal power assets through development, acquisition and turnaround.

From one plant to four, our portfolio has expanded significantly, supported by operational stabilisation, integration of acquired assets and strengthening of core systems. This growth is aligned with India's rising energy demand, where thermal power continues to play a critical role in ensuring grid reliability.
